The grandest of all travel trailers

(Click image to view full size)

Geary Byrd told us that it was 53 feet long and it is a travel trailer built on a semi frame.

We had heard the rumors that Geary and Barbara Byrd had ordered a new RV and
eventually saw it sitting way back on the BARBARA & GEARY BYRD / D.R. & ISLA
MILLER property. On March 20th, 2003, both the Kelly Miller and the Carson &
Barnes shows left winter quarters for the first lots of the season in Hugo, OK
and Paris, TX. Joyce, the boys and I drove to Paris late afternoon Thursday,
March 20th to catch a little bit of the Carson & Barnes Circus set up. We saw
a bunch of units pull onto the Paris fairgrounds and then left to return to
our lot in Hugo. We no matter got onto the road to Hugo and here comes this
huge RV headed towards Paris. We knew what it was, turned around and followed
Mr. Byrd back to the lot. It was beautiful to see this rig, brand spanking
new. Joyce went back with the boys the next morning to take photos of the new RV
for our photo collection.

Circus Vargas rigging

(Click image to view full size)

Our questioning circus fas also asked how the vinyl wrapped around the main poles. Here is a photo of one of the four support poles going through the canvas (vinyl). You also get a look at the lighting in the upper grid. If you look closely you can see how the wire walker's act has been attached to the rigging of the main poles. I hope these additional photo's answer our circus fans questions and we than them for looking and writing.

Inside Circus Vargas Tent

(Click image to view full size)

Photographing the inside of a circus tent can be difficult because of light problems. I asked the show electrician to turn on all of his lights for this picture and it is still dark. You can see the one ring, and box seats right up to the ring curb. Behind the first sets of risers have plastic bucket seats the top rows are flat boards with no backs. Note the lighting grid, that metal section also allows support for the front and back main poles.

Setting up the Big Top

(Click image to view full size)

A fan asked me for more information on setting up the Circus Vargas Big Top. Here is a new view that shows the metal frame work in place and the tent hung from the iron work frame. The frame comes in 18 t o 20 foot sections and is bolted together on the ground and then by cables hoisted into the air. That process takes the better part of an hour. A flat bed truck loaded with the tent is driven under the frame work and the tent is hoisted into the air. As it goes up the tent hangs down and is attached to cables from the frame work. The sides are pulled out and then more metal poles called quarter and side poles are put inside to give the tent shape. Note the metal frame work still on the ground. Those sections will be lifted into position when the tent is up. They give support to the sections holding the tent up and they also are used for the rigging for the flying acts as well as a light grid for the show. This is an amazing style of tent and with a work force of 16 to 18 men can go up in a very short time. The days I clocked it set up was about 3 and a half to four hours.
