WHY JOIN CFA?

As a member of CFA, you will receive six issues a year of our magazine, The White Tops. In addition to organizational information, The White Tops contains columns about current circus acts, show locations, management shifts, marketing strategies, births and deaths.

Recent issues of The White Tops have detailed the glory days of the Ringling show when it traveled on giant trains in the late 1940's and '50's: featured circus reviews, Tent/Top News, and convention information, profiled great animal trainers, and the varied entertainment of showmanship skills only the circus has to offer.

CFA members gather at an annual convention. This circus star-studded affair is always held in conjunction with a performing circus. Circus personnel attend our sessions, socialize and participate in seminars. We discuss circus skills, marketing. animal training and care, how to move a circus, how to feed a circus, and the art of collecting those glorious circus posters.

You name it - CFA will probably be talking about it.

You can see, we are friendly folks, bound by an ever fascinating common interest - the most colorful, and exciting hobby in the world - The CIRCUS!

WHAT IS CFA?

Simply put. a hobby group of 2,000 or so folks just like you who like the circus. It is the most colorful hobby in the world with glittering diversity.

  • Do you get a kick out of clowns, elephants and acrobats?
  • Do you hold your breath while watching the acrobats/artists walk on the high wire, the flyer execute a triple somersault from the trapeze or the human cannon ball zoom skyward from the mouth of a cannon?
  • Do you marvel at the logistical miracle that enables the circus to vanish from one city and appear over night in another city?
  • Do you enjoy seeing performers - old and young, many multi-cultural -as they pass down traditional feats possible only through a lifetime of devotion and discipline?
  • Do you savor the rich history of the circus - a singular part of our culture that remains today wholesome, family entertainment?
  • Does your pulse quicken at the very names and phrases of circusdom? -Clyde Beatty. Emmett Kelly. Gunther Gebel-Williams. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. "Hurry-Hurry-hurry. Step Right Up". "Children of All Ages". "Now Direct Your Eyes Above the Center Ring". "Silence Please".

So do we!

Yes, in a sense, we are children of all ages. The members of CFA come from all walks of life who share a common interest in the circus. Most of us lead ordinary lives as lawyers. teachers, students, individuals and families alike.

WHAT DOES CFA DO?

Many of us belong to local groups under the CFA umbrella. These local groups are known as Tents, and they are named after famous circus personages.

CFA members, including performers and circus personnel love to share all facets of the circus, swap tales of our experiences and observations, trade posters and memorabilia, and attend performances.

We like to visit the backyard where performers and animals practice, awaiting their cues to enter the big top. Because this is where performers live, we never go into the backyard unless invited. Many of us have been fortunate to get to know performers over the years and we enjoy their friendship. We host buffets and receptions for circus personnel when they visit our areas and we help them as a good neighbor would.
