Where the Beatles First Played in Concert, 1964

(Click image to view full size)

The historic Washington Coliseum, north of Union Station in Washington, D.C., was the site of the first live Beatles concert in the U.S. The date was February 11, 1964, following the Fab Four's appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." The Coliseum, formerly known as Uline Arena, was the site of circuses, wrestling, ice hockey, basketball, boxing, and other events, and in recent years has served as a covered parking garage. A commemorative re-creation of the concert is scheduled for the old arena, now slated to become retail and office space. CFA member Mort Gamble presented a paper on the arena's history for the circus track of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association conference last year in Washington. (Click image to view full size)

Now that all eight Big Little acts have confirmed for the great Circus Bonanza scheduled for April 11-12 in Altoona, Pa, the wardrobe fittings have begun. Measurements for the fancy dress and custom tack were being taken today at the winter quarters of Forepaugh-Lubin tent member Katie Harmke. The horses and the ponies, 16 in all, have started rehearsals and are expected to be able to synchronize their performances by April, if not earlier. Sugar cubes are in high demand, along with clean oats and good straw. Make your reservations now! You don't want to miss this unique equestrian experience! Click on CFA Events/Altoona Circus Bonanza for details. Photo by Katie Harmke.
