The historic Washington Coliseum, north of Union Station in Washington, D.C., was the site of the first live Beatles concert in the U.S. The date was February 11, 1964, following the Fab Four's appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." The Coliseum, formerly known as Uline Arena, was the site of circuses, wrestling, ice hockey, basketball, boxing, and other events, and in recent years has served as a covered parking garage. A commemorative re-creation of the concert is scheduled for the old arena, now slated to become retail and office space. CFA member Mort Gamble presented a paper on the arena's history for the circus track of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association conference last year in Washington.
