The Hartford, CT Fire Dept. and Circus Fans Assn. Tent 24, Hartford, CT have begun talks regarding CFA becoming involved with the plans to raise a monument on the site of the 1944 Circus Fire.  75% or more of the original circus grounds remains empty to this day, an elementary school on one corner.

Plans discussed involve $85,000. to $100,000. for a monument that would list all the names of the fire victims.  The opportunity for individuals or groups might exist to purchase "bricks" as is often the case to raise money for memorials.  A ceremony will likely take place this summer.....60th anniversary of the fire.

Tent 24 has been discussing the need for such a thing since the publicity of the 50th anniversary and the news that the fire was likely NOT accidental....and supposed (and very much disputed) identity of Miss 1565.

Tent 24 would like commentary from the CFA membership as to how we might appropriately be involved.  It is imperative that the membership understand that this event is very sensitive in the state of Connecticut.  What we do and what we say should be very well thought out and delivered with the utmost care and respect.  We also recognize that the feelings of circus fans and circus folk everywhere call for appropriate recognition of the event.

Tragedy today is met with  counseling and the assistance of many professionals.  Such was not the case in 1944.  There are a good many folks who have suffered silently for decades with the horrific memory of the fire.  A monument might help to add some closure, would certainly give those who need it a place to go to acknowledge respect for those who suffered.....

Feedback from showfolks and circus fans would be appreciated by our membership......via
