H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco recently issued this statement in support of animals in the circus.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

As a result of the recent publication of a royal decree to ban animals such as tigers, lions and elephants from circus performances in the Kingdom of Belgium, many in the media have speculated about the position of H.S.H Prince Rainier III of Monaco concerning the performance of animals in circuses.

While the proposed royal decree has now been suspended by the Belgian Council of State, Head of State H.S.H Prince Rainier III of Monaco wishes to emphasize his deep respect for animals as well as his passion for the circus and all its art forms, including the classic circus and presentation of animals.

A life time admirer and patron of the classic circus, H.S.H Prince Rainier III of Monaco’s passion for the circus motivated him in 1974 to create the Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo, held in Monaco for the last 30 years and of which he still serves as President. Every year, the very best and most talented circus performers are invited to compete for the coveted Clown d’Or awards – the very highest prizes in the circus world.

Animals have been a vital and beloved part of the circus throughout its history and continue to be very popular with the public today. Many circus families have been in the profession for generations, caring for generations of animals born and bread in Europe: the artists live, work and travel together with the animals as part of their families. Their work has not only entertained but educated millions of children and adults across Europe about the characteristics, capabilities, and habits of both domestic and exotic animals.

H.S.H Prince Rainier III of Monaco’s admiration for animal acts includes a deep respect for the animals and the knowledge that a successful circus animal performance is based on confidence, reward and mutual respect between the animal and its human partner. This respect and understanding between animals and humans is one of the wonders of the classic circus.

H.S.H Prince Rainier III of Monaco does not condone the mistreatment of animals and the acts selected for invitation to the Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo reflect this commitment to animal care and proper treatment.

H.S.H Prince Rainier III of Monaco further believes that good regulations based on internationally accepted standards for animal care and transport are the most appropriate way to endure high quality and appropriate animal care while at the same time preserving this rich and rewarding form of circus art for the benefit of the circus families, their animals, and current and future generations of Europeans.
