On Monday night April 18, 2005 David Orr, Pennsylvania State Chairman of the Circus Fans Association of America, appeared on the Alan Colmes talk radio show with PETA representative Brandy Viadolli. Show host, Alan Colmes did a great job of keeping the debate on an even keel.

Brandy Viadolli, known as the PETA Tiger Lady, citied Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey for abusing animals in their care. The PETA referred to situations involving famous Ringling animal trainer, Gunther Gebel- Williams where she alleged that he used whips in the training of his animals. Dave Orr said that he had personally watched Gunther Williams in training sessions with his animals and had never witnessed the animals being abused. Brandy Viadolli indicated that whips are used to coerce animals into performing tricks. An animal trainer, Doug Terranova, called in and said that whips are used as an extension of an animal trainer’s arm not for punishment. Of course, circus fans know this.

Alan Colmes said to Brandy, “Isn’t it true that PETA is against dogs and cats as house pets?” Brandy answered that PETA was not against dogs and cats as house pets. She continued by saying that dogs and cats provide companionship to the pet owner. In fact she acknowledged that she had a house pet. The issue at hand was PETA’S position that it was wrong to train animals to do tricks for human entertainment...

At the end of the show Alan Colmes thanked the participants for a very spirited debate.

The Circus Fans Association of America appreciates David Orr’s willingness to appear on the Colmes program opposite a well rehearsed spokesperson for PETA.

This appearance by David Orr is another excellent example of CFA members standing up for the American Circus Industry.
