Re: Agnes King and Bette Leonard
Scholarship
To officers and friends in CFA:
My mother Agnes King was the recipient of the Bette
Leonard Scholarship, enabling her to attend the convention in Seattle.
The
trip and convention were memorable, and she owes
her enjoyment to those of you who, as longtime CFA members and friends, saw fit
to honor her with this trip.
I remember Bette Leonard well, seeing her many
times as a child both on the lot and at conventions, so Mom as recipient of this
scholarship is even more special.
Agnes "inherited" her love of the circus from my
father, Bob King, who inherited his fascination from his uncle Demas Coe, who
was a newspaperman and printer in Richmond, IN. We have found that Uncle Demas
was friends with someone on Hagenbeck-Wallace when the show headquartered in
Peru, IN. Demas would take time off and join the show when it left winter
quarters, spending several weeks on the road. So he passed this on to his
nephew Bob, and the rest is history.
Please accept my thanks for honoring Agnes King in
this way. She is already planning for next year's convention in
Chicago!
