2010-11_Report-The Bette Leonard Fund

The Bette Leonard Fund

Committee Report for 2010/2011

By Jack Painter

This report covers the period from the 2009 Las Vegas Convention to the Newberg, NY Convention.

Membership of the committee was holdovers Jack T. Painter and Niles Calhoun and new appointee Jack Stengel.  The new member was sent information about the committee.

Activity of the committee was concentrated in the second half of the year.  In April the CFA treasurer informed the chairman that the BLF had $391.  This would fund a partial scholarship to the convention. The chairman then wrote a letter requesting contributions to a group of possible contributors.  Committee members were sent a letter updating them about actions of the chairman including a copy of the article written for publication in the May-June issue of The White Tops.  By June 29, 2011, the BLF had reached $851.57.

Having received two nominations for scholarships, the chairman contacted one and had the other contacted by a CFA member who knew them well.  Both nominees felt honored to be considered but had to decline the offer.  One for a business commitment for the convention dates, and the other due to a scheduled medical procedure.

Since there will be no scholarships awarded this year (2011) the fund should increase so that next year offers can be made much earlier so possible conflicts might be avoided.

The chairman and Niles Calhoun, who have served beyond usual terms, have discussed the future of the committee and the chairman sent to president-elect Beurlen an e-mail with some of our thoughts.  A copy of that e-mail is attached to this report.  Not in that e-mail but we think discussion and decisions made about such things as partial scholarships, other uses for the fund such as dues for some members having financial problems, etc. (I think there may have been some of this in the past, but results not passed along.)

Respectfully submitted,

Jack T. Painter
