CFA Public Relations Report

Mort Gamble, Chair
Activities of Mort Gamble and Committee

Wrote a regular column, “The CFA Word,” for The White Tops;  contributed other pieces to The White Tops, including movie review of Water for Elephants, announcements, photos, and event write-ups.

Managed CFA website, providing photos, news, and events coverage on a weekly and/or daily basis. Responded to inquiries fielded from CFA website, including requests for information, queries, events and announcements posting, and reactions to opinions expressed.

Launched with excellent leadership by Cindy Pagel and approval of Board of Directors CFA’s first-ever Facebook page, with 5,400 visits recorded in its first month. Since the page was published in May 2011, the site has had 198 Facebook members “like” the page, 10,458 views of the page, and 110 posts (comments).

Monitored Forepaugh-Lubin Facebook page; provided circus updates on personal Facebook page.
Worked closely with Circus4Youth on launch of its Facebook page and development of promotional video with AYCO.

Promoted annual CFA photo contest with winners announced at Emmett Kelly Tent banquet, Hagerstown, MD.

Provided PR support, media materials for premiere of Water for Elephants film in Connecticut.
Served on Newburgh convention planning committee and worked with Cindy Pagel and planning committee on development of convention web page, program, sponsorships, and publicity.

Gave a two-hour presentation on circus history and traditions to the Appalachian Mythbusters freshman January Term class at Bethany College; developed Power Point and study guide.

Launched circus exhibit and gave presentation at Brooke County Public Library, Wellsburg, WV.
Served as MC for Forepaugh-Lubin Tent No. 2, Altoona-State College, PA, Christmas banquet and Circus Week in Altoona banquet. Prepared World Circus Day resolution. Provided PR support for Forepaugh-Lubin Tent and others as requested.

Presented a circus paper at Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association joint national conference, San Antonio, TX, on circus autobiographies.

Provided PR support for upcoming Tampa 2012 CFA convention.
  • Conducted interview with incoming CFA President Clark Beurlen for The White Tops.
  • Worked closely with Membership Committee on promotional strategies.
  • Worked with Animal Welfare Committee on issues strategy, including launch and updates of Grassroots link for animal issues.
  • Provided support for OABA and World Circus Federation promotions.
  • Consulted regularly with Jim Cole (Circus 4 Youth), Gary Payne (Animal Welfare Committee), Edward Meals (Emmett Kelly Tent president), Andy Bakner (Emmett Kelly Tent secretary-treasurer), David P. Orr (Forepaugh-Lubin Tent), Dr. Don Curtis (past CFA president), Edward Limbach (past CFA Public Relations Chair), John and Mardi Wells, Rodney Huey (World Circus Federation), Maxine House, Pat Pagel, Cindy Pagel, Clark Beurlen, Pete Adams, Peter Wagner, Maureen Brunsdale (Illinois State University/Milner Library), CFA Board of Directors, and others.
  • Served as “pin agent” for annual OABA Animal Fund promotion.
  • Provided regular CFA updates and/or other assistance to circus organizations, including Circus Model Builders and Circus Historical Society.

General Goal for Publicity and Marketing Committee

Devise innovative strategies to communicate who the CFA is, what it does, and why it matters in support of the circus industry, its people and animals.

Specific Goals
  1. Enhance CFA website.
  2. Develop national and regional promotions.
  3. Coordinate closer promotion with Circus4Youth.
  4. Produce one or more video productions.
  5. Support CFA goals of resource development, including recruitment of new members, fundraising, and leadership recruitment.
