2009-10_Report-CFA Membership Committee

Circus Fans Association of America
Report of the CFA National Membership

Committee Co-Chairpersons
Barbara Moore and Gary C. Payne

Unless you are one of the few CFA members we motivated to recruit new members during the last 5 years, we are going to report that our efforts have mostly failed to meet goals. Our surge of success has stalled and backslid. The sad statisitics show that the backslide began in 2009 and continued in 2010 placing us back at the 1500 mark. The list of 2010 "unpaids" blew us right out of our starbacks! There were over 400. Thats 25% of our roster. It looks like that will boil down to a record loss of 165 members! Over 200 of our longtime members choose to "pay late" annually. This creates a tremendous workload for Cheryl Deptula and this committee.

The follow up on the record number of "unpaids" was monumental. There was unprecedented cooperation from State Chairmen and District Directors. We cannot leave out of this report the significant fact that the economy is poor and many of those who did not "re-up" said they had to eliminate the expense. We hope to see these members again. But the 200 who pay late every year are a drag on our CFA that we must eliminate. This is time and effort better spent recruiting.

2010 enjoyed a few more "Guest Required" Tent and Top events. These events included extra efforts and asked members to bring a guest(s). CFA VP, Peter Wagner, backed us up with the most effective CFA recruiting brochure ever printed. It's available to you via Cheryl Deptula @ $5. per 100. The committee's proposed "Save the Circus" campaign was voted into existence by the CFA board in Las Vegas. Thus, 8' high "Join CFA Here" Logo banners were produced and shipped and are appearing at venues where Tents or individual members set up CFA tables. If we could just motivate our members to plan and execute tables - recruitment will follow. Use the banners, and brochures, wear the authorized CFA logo jackets, shirts, and hats, and "Save the Circus" buttons. Buttons via Gary Payne @ $1. each + shipping. In short - Members need to advocate for Circus and CFA. You can't win if you don't play.

The committee has had a lot of turnover these last 4 years. In 2010 we determined we must add 3 names. We're pleased with our choices - Robert Houston, Mike Miller, and Don Covington. Pointing out the added responsibility of Eastern Vice President, the work load associated with his position as chair of CFA's National Animal Welfare Committee, and the startup of CFA Convention 2015, Gary Payne was asked to step down from Co-Chair of this committee. Barbara Moore will continue as Co-Chair. Maxine House has asked Pat Pagel to take Gary's position. Pat has set a goal of 200 new members for 2011.

Please support Pat and Co-Chair Barbara Moore. Make 2011 the year you pay your dues early. Wear the authorized CFA logo. Put recruiting on your agenda and that of your Tent or Top. No statement makes it more clear than, "Who have you asked to join CFA this year"?
