EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT

The Education Committee was established over twenty years ago and in that time has helped innumerable teachers prepare units on the circus.  We have provided resources, videos and connections to the circus industry so that teachers could develop interesting units for their students.  But times have changed and for the first time in the existence of the Committee we did not receive single request for help in developing a circus unit.  The No Child Left Behind Act has pretty much ended a lot of the innovation that once went on in classrooms across America.  The high stakes test is now the driving force in classrooms and any spare time is now devoted to preparing students to take the test.  This is especially true now that the test results are becoming part of the teacher evaluation process.

The Committee has begun to look at a new audience for our services.  Some members have been very effective in presenting talks to clubs and service organizations.  While we realize that giving a talk to a group is not everyone’s cup of tea, there are people who could do just that.  It would require some preparation on the part of the individual but the Committee could help by providing ideas and materials.  We have had individuals like Bob Goldsack who have put together short courses, including material on the circus, for local colleges.  When he presents the course it is usually to a straw house.

Perhaps the best way to attack this problem is to have volunteers who would give presentations to local service clubs and circus sponsors.  We would like to establish a Circus Fans of America Speakers Bureau and post the members names on our website.  Would you be interested?  We welcome your comments and suggestions.
