2010-11_Report-Central Region Vice-President

Central Region Vice-President’s Report

Overall, it has been a quiet but productive year in the central region. A year that actually began with an exceptional, very enjoyable - and even profitable -  convention at Grand Rapids, MI.

For me the year has centered on planning the 2014 convention which will be held in eastern Iowa. The location will give us access to the childhood homes of the Ringling Brothers, Felix Adler and Buffalo Bill. Regional speakers will share information on the important role the state, the home of CFA’s first president, has played in the development of the Circus in America plus the amazing story of the nation’s second largest county fair approach to “attracting a crowd when the unique becomes commonplace”, and perhaps two different circuses.

I recently enjoyed a nice visit with owner Tray Key when Culpepper and Merriweather played four nearby towns in the coverage area of the newspaper I own. He proudly showed me his new tent complete with the C&M logo on every few feet of the sidewall. He ordered it that way so everyone would know it was a completely new tent and not purchased used from some other show. He also told me he recently became engaged to his featured aerialist Simone. The wedding will take place right after the close of the current season. Culpepper and Merriweather will be the host show for the 2014 convention.

In Iowa Ron “Toto” Johnson has taken leadership of the Wayne Franzen Tent. He can be reached at 420 East 31st Street, Davenport, IA 52803. District Seven Director Eric Brown is still very active in the presentation of quality circus style draft horse teams. His most recent triumph is his 10 horse pyramid hitch, over a year in the making.

In District Five Jack Stengel, always a very active and visible director, is stepping down this convention having completed the maximum number of terms in office. His replacement will be H. L. Hutchenson, a longtime circus fan whose address is 72 Club View Drive, Sioux Falls, SD, 57110. His home telephone number is 605-335-3877. HLH, as he prefers to refer to himself in his emails, has already sent me multiple reports regarding appearances of Culpepper and Merriweather,  Big Top Circus, various performances of Shrine Circuses in cities big and small and Carson Barnes Circus taking place in his region.

Al Ward reported there is only one tent in Canada, the Fred Logan Tent #119. But the members are very active, holding a number of events during the past year.

Constance Thomas, District Eight Director, submitted a detailed report written by Doug Kruest regarding Ohio. The Buckeye State has four active tents and one top. CFA members across the state were involved in nine events during the past year including a special four circus tour of the state with Maxine House and John and Mardi Wells as honored guests.
