To All Showfolks and Fans:

We have received several emails concerning the delay in sending out the tribute series to showfolks buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hugo, Oklahoma. Due to new job positions, we have been extremely busy and have not been able to devote time to the series and to doing it 100% plus to honor those that we are covering in the series. We will continue to work on the series as time permits. This also applies to our series on the Holly Bros. Barnes & Bidwell Circus series.

Special thanks to DUDLEY HAMILTON, Kelly Miller Circus winter quarters superintendent, for the additional information on the showfolks interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

In Part 8 of the Mount Olivet Cemetery series, we are covering the gravestones of:
  • JACK B. MOORE
  • GRACE McINTOSH McFARLAND
  • DONNIE & IONE McINTOSH
Previous editions of SHOWMEN'S REST series can be seen at:
circusnews.com website.

All photos were taken in the SHOWMEN'S REST section of Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hugo, Oklahoma.

We would appreciate your participation in this series. In the next email, we will send photos of the gravestones of
  • SAMUEL PEREZ
  • HOWARD RICHMOND
If you have any information that you would like to see added to the series covering the showfolks above, please send it as soon as possihble for inclusion with Part 9 of the series.

JACK B. MOORE
JAN 18, 1919
MAR 15, 1969

Jack B. Moore started out with an under canvas movie theater. He showed a jungle movie. After the movie he would have an after concert featuring a wrestling bear. He wintered in Hugo, Oklahoma in 1954. Jack B. Moore formed a partnership with D.R. Miller called the TEX CARSON WILD ANIMAL CIRCUS. In 1957, the title was changed to the CARSON & BARNES WILD ANIMAL CIRCUS. He also put out the BARNES and DAILEY CIRCUS in 1964. However, he reportedly closed the show after pressure from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus concerning the title similarity.

On the front of the monument are etchings of guy out ropes, stakes and the words MAIN ENTRANCE. The monument is a BIG TOP. On the backside of the gravestone are etched the words, FOUNDER OF CARSON and BARNES CIRCUS.

GRACE McINTOSH McFARLAND
JUL 25, 1915
No additional date as of the date of the photo in 2003

We could not find any other information about this showfolk. If anyone has additional information about the show life of this showfolk, please send as soon as possible to peterscircus@AOL.com.

The gravestone has floral etchings and has a photo of the performer on a trapeze.

IONE McINTOSH DONNIE McINTOSH
MAY 29, 1916 NOV 20, 1925
MAY 3, 1998 FEB 9, 2001

Ione is the former wife of Bob Stevens, owner of STEVENS BROS. CIRCUS. Note: We are not sure of the correct spelling of the name Stevens. We apologize if we have spelled it incorrectly. She had concessions on the AL G KELLY MILLER BROS. CIRCUS. They both had concessions in various facets of show business.

On the monument are the etchings of a girl on the left and a boy on the right holding a bouquet of balloons. The following words are inscribed:

CONCESSIONS
(between the balloons)

CIRCUS, FAIRS, CARNIVALS, RODEOS
ICE SHOWS
STREET CORNERS

WE HAVE HAD THE GOOD LIFE
BUT THE SEASON ENDED

Note: It is interesting that the word circus is not plural like the other facets of show business.

Note in the photo below that two flower urns were added to the gravestone in later years.

If you have information you would like to see included with these photos, please send it as soon as possible. We would especially like to list the shows that these showfolks trouped with during their careers. Also, if there are any corrections to information we list in this series, please contact us immediately so we may set the record straight.

Photos are also attached to the email so those of you who are able to open attachments can view them at full size.

This series is being done because it is felt that many folks will not be able to journey to Hugo, Oklahoma to see these magnificent monuments. These gravestones have been erected to honor the memory of those whose varied skills have allowed the circus-going public to view the wonder of the CIRCUS. We would like you to note that all of the showfolks interred at Mount Olivet will not be represented. Only those monuments that noted a circus motif were photographed. If you have photos and information of other showfolk's monuments, please send as soon as possible to: peterscircus@AOL.com

Sincerely,Peter and Joyce Rosa
