Keep up the pressure!
The Judiciary hearing on the Massachusetts 'bullhook' ban
was held yesterday (October 21). It started at 1pm and went until after 8pm.
While our side was outnumbered, we were well represented by both CFA President
Gary Payne and our own Kari Johnson. Also in attendance were a number of
people from Feld, OABA, a representative from EMA, Commerfords, the Murrays,
founder of Southwick Zoo, and a handful of others.
This was just a preliminary hearing, so no decision was
made. It did seems like the committee was reluctant to support new
legislation when animal abuse is already illegal. Governor Brown's veto
in California seemed to resonate. Also they gave a good amount of
deference to actual expert testimony as opposed to random "youtube
activists".
Moving forward, we need to keep the letters and phone calls
coming, especially from legitimate experts. The more veterinarians,
elephant keepers, trainers, and conservationists we can get to voice their
expert opinions the better. You know the other side will be working on
parading out their paid witnesses and vets with no elephant experience.
(FYI: Oakland Zoo, HSUS, PAWS, Born Free, and International Fund for
Animal Welfare were all there to give testimony.)
We must keep up the pressure and make sure we get all of our
facts, studies, research, and expertise to them. See Grassroots tab on this website for more information.
Fight on!
