Please oppose this bill which would eliminate the human-elephant bond. SB 716, the California bill that would make interacting with elephants illegal, has been assigned to the Public Safety Committee in the California State Assembly. WE NEED TO STOP THIS
HELP OPPOSE CALIFORNIA SB 716
Save our right to keep elephants in our lives. SB 716 is the
first step to eliminating the human/animal bond. It would ban
what elephant experts call the guide (referred to as a
“bullhook” in the bill). It is the husbandry tool with which
elephants are humanely managed.
Assembly Member Bonta and Senator Lara’s bill, SB 716,
condemns elephants to a life behind barriers. It has made it
through the Senate and is now being considered by the
California Assembly. Although the hearing is scheduled for June 30, your communications will only count if you respond by June 25.
You can help by writing your Assembly Member. Here are some tips:
• Include your name and address or your letter will not be entered into the record.
• Incorporate the following sentence into the beginning of your letter: “OPPOSE SB 716
- Please accept this letter into public record to be included in any hearing, studies, and/
or reports pertaining to this issue.”
• If you are a California resident use the “Contact Me” form on your Assembly Member’s page and the
Public Safety Committee.
• If you are an elephant professional, a veterinarian, have specialized knowledge, etc., please fax your
letter to 916-319-3745 as well as emailing the Members of the Public Safety Committee.
Sample talking points:
• Write about your personal elephant experience and what elephants mean to you.
• Elephant guides enable outreach, having positive effects for elephants globally.
• Major advances in elephant care would not have been made if not for the guide: elephant orthotics
and therapeutic foot regimens, diagnostic tests and dosing guidelines for elephant illnesses, and
treatments for Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus (EEHV).
• Guides allow for safe, stress-free medical care for elephants and veterinarians.
• SB 716 is unnecessary legislation. Elephant care and welfare is already highly regulated on the
federal, state, and local levels.
