Tom Dunwoody of Circus Hall of Fame Has Passed Away

Noted circus historian and museum director was a collector of Hagenbeck-Wallace posters and memorabilia. Funeral services planned. UPDATE: Tom's obituary is printed below.

Word has been received that Tom Dunwoody, director of the International Circus Hall of Fame in Peru, IN, and a noted circus historian, has passed away after an extended illness. Details will be forthcoming.

An expert on the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus and other shows that were headquartered in Peru, Mr. Dunwoody hosted the national convention of the Circus Historical Society in 2013 at the Hall of Fame grounds. During that convention, he displayed a unique collection of posters and memorabilia pertaining to the Hagenbeck-Wallace show, and offered perspective on the people who made circus history in that area, including showman Ben Wallace.

at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home in Peru, IN. Visitation is from Noon to 2:00 P.M. Services are at 2:00 P.M.

Obituary: 

Thomas Jefferson Dunwoody, 74, of Peru, passed away at 6:45 PM Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at St. Vincent’s Seton Specialty Hospital, Indianapolis, IN. He was born in Huntington, IN, on May 12, 1940, to Carl and Lucile Morrison Dunwoody. Tom married Mary Kay Manrose in Winchester, IN, on June 8, 1963, and she survives. 

 Thomas graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He was employed as an Architect at Fanning Howey Associates until he retired in 1996.  Thomas volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts of America earning the Silver Beaver Award. 

Tom was the past president of the International Circus Hall of Fame and presently the Executive Director and Curator of the Museum of the CHOF.  He was a member of the Circus Fans Association of America, the Circus Model Builders and the Circus Historical Society. 

In addition to his  wife Mary Kay survivors include sons, Jefferson C. Dunwoody and his wife Jana of Indianapolis, IN, Timothy C. Dunwoody and his wife Lorri of Indianapolis, IN, and Charles T. Dunwoody and his wife Kara of Caledonia, MI; a daughter Joslyn Kuykendall of Conway, Arkansas; grandchildren J.T. Jumonville, Jenna Ione Gass, Stacey Fields, Brandy Maddox, Denise Kline, Tommy Dunwoody, Reuben Jacobs, Aaron Jacobs, Nathan Jacobs, Jacob Forrest Dunwoody and Kaylee Rian Dunwoody;7 great-grandchildren; one sister Mary Alice Lamon, Montpelier, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends will gather from Noon – 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main Street, Peru, IN.  A memorial service celebrating the life of Thomas Jefferson Dunwoody will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home with the Pastor Doug Givan officiating.


In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made through the funeral home to the International Circus Hall of Fame.
